  • Raw Umber is a rich brown pigment made from the natural brown clays found on earth.

  • This familiar rich dark brown earth pigment is semi-transparent with medium tinting strength.
  • An extremely permanent inorganic color, it mixes well with sedimentary Cobalt Blue or Cobalt Violet for granular middle-value grays that evoke mood, lend depth of field and create form or spaces.

  • It has surprisingly good tinting strength, a high level of opacity, mixes well with greens, and is quick drying in oil form.
  • It has excellent color properties and can create a variety of subtle, clear tints when mixed with white.

  •  It grays when mixed with blue and white. Raw Umber can tend towards chalkiness in dark mixes in oil form.
  • It was named after Umbria, a region in Italy where it was mined.
